Cinnabar is the red mineral that Chinese seal paste is made from. Our mark is the old seal-script form of 朱 (zhū, cinnabar red): a tree with one stroke across the trunk. The Shuowen Jiezi, a dictionary from around 100 AD, explains 朱 as a tree with a red heart. We draw that stroke in cinnabar.
